I'm thinking of buying a canon XL2 for the my main camera while making a series of short films. I was just wondering if anyone had any feedback on the camera, suggestions etc, just so that i dont make a huge mistake if i get one.

Thanks

do the right thing

It doesn't have a flip open screen which actually is a huge advantage, thought you should have at least one other video tap as well. Check out the Panasonic DVX100A -that's a great camera.

Originally I was going to get an XL1 but was talked into getting the 24p capability of the DVX100A/XL2 by a film student I've been working with. I researched these two cameras, having been sold on Canon before. Even talked to a documentary filmmaker who worked with DVX100As and he said that (a) few people actually change the lenses enough to make that feature on the XL2 worthwhile (b) the XL2's he's worked with had issues with the automatic focus changing at odd times. (c) For some reason Canon's aren't as good in low light settings. He had no issues with the DVX100A.

Another factor to consider is the DVX100A is a bit more guerrilla like, in that the XL2 looks more professional and is more likely to attract the authorities. If you want to shoot and run that's a consideration. The DVX100A is also pretty light.

Long story short my DVX100A arrived last Friday.

Not sure about the XL2, but the XL1s we worked with had issues with the _manual_ focus changing at odd times :). They'd set the manual focus and a few minutes later it would have wandered off by itself...
