Okay so I have a quick question.

I have an ATR-55 shotgun Mic (Which I love) but I have been meaning to buy, or at least make a boompole so I can get the mic closer to my actors.

Anyways, I'm confused about how to go about this. Some sites list ways to make a homemade boompole, but im confused...

My Mic only has a cord of at around 2-3 feet. If I attach it to the end of a pole and stabilize it, how is my plug going to reach my camera?

Basically I have NO IDEA what type of extension cord to buy, or how to go about setting it up after I have everything, really...

Any help would be awesome, I may be completely off here.

yes, i agree. If your camera accepts xlr then an xlr entension is perfect. Otherwise, if your camera has a 1/8 in. input, you can buy a mic cable that is xlr on one end and 1/8 in. on the other. As for a boom stand, if your not wanting to spend alot of money, stop by your local music store and grab a cheap mic boom stand. You can get them for around $10-$25 and when fully extended, they work pretty decent.

The big problem with using a mic stand is you cannot move the mic as the actors speak. A highly directional shotgun mic has its "sweet spot" - the area where the sound is picked up the best.

Even attaching a $20 shock mount to a painters pole will get you better sound than putting your mic on a stand.

What if you held the mic stand like a boom instead of planting it on the ground as you typically would?

Typically a mic stand is made of metal and heavy. That makes it difficult for the boom operator to hold it close to the actors for any length of time and harder to move it from person to person as they speak. They are kind of awkward to hold, too and the mic cable moving against the metal stand can sometimes cause pings that are recorded. But there is no reason you can't do that if that's what you prefer. The goal is to get the mic as close as you can while maintaining maneuverability- use whatever method you like the best.

We've had to do that before... it kind of worked, but was hardly ideal.

The other question is the mic holder on the stand even secure enough to hold the mic in different positions or is it mostly designed to hold the mic when the stand is upright.

Out of the cables listed on the BH Photo site, which one of them should I buy? Any one of them?

I don't want to get the wrong one.

well at the end we can make the conclusion that the boom mic has the difference only of a metal rod.am i right?if yes than which mic?other than boom stuff?is the most effecient one?specially for outdoor shootings? because in outdoor shoots if u take a good mic it will catch the voice of other thngs too......than what should we do how should we solve the problem?

last question regarding video editing.as we know dv film production has made easier to make films the question i want to know is that when we directly transfer film from dv to pc for edit.do we need a video editing card?bcz i have heard if we dont have the capturing card the quality will fall.is it right????

I'll leave the technicals of boom and shotgun and such to someone more qualified to respond. What I want to add is that if you are shooting outside you need to seriously consider a windsock. It sucks to have a perfect take screwed by wind noise.

Buy a windsock to go over your mic. Lacking that you might try a regular sock. I don't know if it would work though so test it first before dragging cast and crew out to location.

Another solution is have your sound guy pay real attention to wind noise. If the take had crappy sound you want to know about it so you can judge time vs ADR.

actually, when i was refering to a boom stand, i was referring to an actualy boom stand and not a mic stand. Boom stands are very light and easey to hold. They can be extened 10-15 ft. depending on the kind that you have.
