i need rain and i need a bulb to blow on que. Is there a way to cheaply make artifical rain? maybe involbing PCV piping and a hose? i dont need alot of rain just enough for close shots so it only has to cover a person and about two feet around them. for the light to blow, i was thinking maybe just have somebody pull the string off camera but i dont know how that would look. are there sfx bulbs i can buy or is there a trick? finally gun shot blasts. I have a gun that looks like it shoots and i can find sound effects but the gun doesnt have a blast. is there a way to create one in post or is there another cheap trick? (maybe have the screen flash white for a frame or two) thanks

Dunno if you've filmed these scenes yet or not, noticing you posted this weeks ago, but here goes:

PVC Rain - PVC tubing, at least 6-8 pipes, drill holes, randomly along the pvc tubes and space the tubes apart about 1.5 feet, mount them on 2x4's at least the same length as the PVC piping.

Close off the piping at both ends, and rig a general garden hose to one end of the piping, and make sure to connect all pipes at that and (where the garden hose is). Use "Plumbers Putty" to cap off the pipes and insert the hose at one end of EACH pipe.. plumber's putty is pretty cheap and you can reuse it again and again.

Connect the secured pipes to two more 2X4's, congruent (not paralell) to your current setup, install "legs" to your height specifications - this would typically be at least 3-4 feet above the height of your camera shot.

This contraption should resemble a sqaure frame, with your PVC piping running along it.

Connect the garden hose to a water source, turn on the water, and voila! instant rain. Realistic too.

I've never used this method myself, but heard from other indie's how it worked for them.

As for the lightbulb thing, you got me there. If you've figured it out, let me know. 😀

From what I've heard rain doesn't really record well on film or video. If you make your actors wet and don't how the ground (or a surface like a windshield) you can probably add the rain in during Post production.

Rain need to be backlit. And the lights need to be powerful (10ks and above work best) and placed properly.

The bulb effect needs a squib. I do this gag a lot. Since an explosive is involved, please use a licensed professional.

thanks, all this helps. as for the bulb thing, where can i find a professional? there is no other way to do it? i was just thinking extending the string with a black piece of string or fishing line and just have some body pull the string off camera.

Ever think of shooting the bulb with a pellet gun? The camera wouldn't pick up the pellet unless you have a 1200fps camera, lol.

Add milk to the water for the rain and you get into-reflecting rain! Shows up well on film when lit well! Yep...I admit it...I learned this on the Universal Studios Tram Tour. haha!
