Hello, I had a quick question about a camera I would like to rent. I'm about to start shooting a short movie and I was offered a Sony PD170 for 70 USD a day, is this worth it? A side from that, I know lighting, the story, sound makes a good movie but I would really like to know if I'm going get film like quality with this camera? I'm not even sure if it's 24p, 16:9. I'm trying to get a hold of a Canon XL2 and I heard I can get a very professional image with this camera, very "film like". But right now I'd like to know about the Sony. Thanks a lot guys.

It's not a bad camera, but it's straight PAL or NTSC and only has digital 16:9. The BBC used to use them a lot for documentary and 'reality' shows, but the XL2 would be better for drama shooting.

I'll keep that in mind MarkG, I'm gonna try my best to get a hold of the XL2. Do you any site where I can see amatuer footage taken with the XL2.

Cameras, like cars, soft drinks and computers are a personal choice - one isn't better than the other. I have used both the Sony and the Canon. I dislike the XL2 intensly. Doesn't make it a bad camera - just that I don't like the use or the look it produces. On my list of miniDV cameras the Sony comes in third. I actually like using it. I've used in on The Amazing Race and am currently using it on Fear Factor Live at Universal Studios.

Take a look at "Pieces of April" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0311648/ it was shot using the PD150. Steven Soderbergh shot "Full Frontal" on the XL1s. I don't think I could tell the difference watching the two movies back to back.

Thanks a lot for answering back, I took a look at both movies and it has pretty cool quality, altough I have to be honest, Pieces of Apirl's quality looked a little odd, that's my opinion. You can tell it wasn't you standard "film" camera when they would move the camera around, i guess because of the frame rate...but I think it's perfect for a short movie, don't you think?

Well, as you say, there's a lot of personal choice involved: but to me the lack of a true 16:9 CCD on the PD170 is a serious limitation.
