Okay, so I just got done writing my first low budget movie that was produced. When I say, low budget, I mean a $60 grand movie. I was unpaid, but expect to see some back-end. My question is what am I worth? I have no Idea what to charge for my specs or anything. I have recently have been having people ask me to write their stories, and of course I need a contract....but what do I charge? What is the going rate? Maybe this is a open question. But how much is to little and how much to too much? Now what is the going percentage of ownership or the script? if sold or produced.....the business section of being a screenwriter is written in Chinese...to me anyways. Any advice would be appreciated. any sites I can check out? Anything ...anything.

Thanks

A good standard is 3% of the total budget.

In general you will not be asked what YOU charge - a producer
will tell you what their budget is for the script. You then take the
deal or negotiate a better one. If any producer asks what you
charge tell them 4.5% of the total budget.

To write an original script you charge what you feel you are worth.
If they cannot afford your quote, you negotiate.

In most cases you will sell all rights. You will not own any percentage
of the script after the sale. If you have the clout to keep some of the
rights then you can ask for what you want to ask for. When you get
to that point, you really need a lawyer.
