Hey guys, I love creating films though I've been facing a huge obstacle when it comes to writing. I'm not sure if I'm going through a writers block or I'm just not that strong in story, but it's been well over a year since I've been able to come up with anything. It's like my mind just freezes up, I think I reject ideas easily for not being good enough. Any suggestions when it comes to thinking up possible story ideas, would be greatly appreciated. Obviously I can't get too far, if I don't have a story in the works. Are there some good books out there that you would recommend?
Thanks, Jo 😀

One thing I find is that if I take two weak ideas and throw them both into the same story, I often end up with something much better than either by themselves. That might be worth a try.

Start with a theme. What do you feel strongly about? Then come up with different scenes that illustrate that issue. Create two characters to take opposite sides of the issue, they can be friends who debate or they can be good guy and bad guy. String it all together with some additional scenes to form a narrative. If you have something the rough draft will write itself, if not, start over.

Thanks guys 😀 I really appreciate your help. It definitely helps, I think what I need is structure. I become overwhelmed by the thought of having to write a story. I should be breaking it down into a structure, like you mentioned RJSchwartz. I'll give it a whirl!

all those stories you reject because you think they're weak can become something big. if you work with them carefully.

any story, no matter how simple it sounds can be a great story if you take your time to give it a good theme(s), interesting and memorable characters. interesting turns and twists give your story a lot of value too.

just start working with what you got and try to make it the best you can out of it.

good luck.

inspiration doesn't come while thinking about writing, it comes DURING the writing. sit at a laptop/keyboard/with pad and pen, etc... and actually write. eventually something will come.
