I thought that the more pictures or frames they put in per second the more life like the video would be...Like our eyes taking in 100 pictures per second or a television running at 100hz similar to eyes.

So I am now really interested in buying the Panasonic DVX100b because It looked so much better than a normal DV cam but it has only 24 frames per second and I've tried reading up on it but I can't understand why it's better to have less pictures per second (frames per second)

Do you want life-like or film-like? 24p models film which has a different look.

If you want more life-like there are higher frame rates than 30.

As always "better" is so personal, it's difficult for me to
know what is "better".

24 fps has been the film standard since the beginning of
sound. So for several generations people are accustom
to seeing images projected at that rate. I don't believe
it's better.

As video cameras got better and cheaper, people wanted
a more film like look so the manufacturers left the 29.97
interlaced frames and went to the 24 progressive frames
to give that look.

I can't say that it's better, but 24 fps has been the film
standard for so long, it's what people want to see. If you
are going from video to film 24p makes it much easier,
but if you are staying in the NTSC format then you wiil
end up back at 29.97 anyway.

Thanks guys 🙂 When I look at 24p it actually looks better, I think maybe it's like smoothing over the pictures. I was reading up on high end cameras that have a mini dv tape and alot of the reviews where about artifacts being left in the film after editing..Should I worry too much about that? I am seriously contemplating buying a 24p camera to go with my panasonic 3 ccd camera to shoot 2 angles.

Does it also look better in 24p because it is progressive frames as opposed to 30 interlaced frames? ?:)?

neither one is "better" 24p is more like film. 30 or 60i usually used for broadcast. my shooting preference is 30p but thats just what i like.

Thanks Zak for the quick reply. So the Inerlace and progressive modes are the same? 🙂 is it just the 24 and 30 frame that I need to look at for the quality aspect to make it more film like? 🙂

To be truthful film like has more to do with lighting than frame rates. A properly lit set using 30p will probably look more filmlike than actual film on a flatly lit set. TV news and shows look particularly video-like because they combine flat lighting and higher frame.

True, I remember one time I used well a halogen light shining through a glass of orange to give it a dark sunrise look at my desk and that looked film like 🙂 I just have to find the right time of day to film with a good sunlight level.
