I found a short film 10 page script I like on inktip.com, notified the writer I am interested, and now the writer is asking me to make an offer. I am really a bit at a loss at what to offer. I would not want to insult with too low, nor pay too high being this would be my first film and am an indie filmmaker (teacher by profession). And I have seen many writers allow short scripts to be used for free in return for credits and a copy of the movie. Any guidelines on what to pay? I am not a member nor registered with the WGA so union wages are not mandatory. Any input appreciated. I have been doing some writing myself, I have written a few short scripts, but of course buying one ready to go perhaps with a better plot and characters might be nicer.

There is no set price.

Shorts are offered from zero to one-thousand dollars in other forums. I have not seen more than that. And I don't know if they are getting that price either.

Maybe offer five hundred if it's really professional and the story is what you want. Can only say no.

Have to start somewhere.

I would offer a deferred payment on the script...based in whether or not you can make money from the sale of the finished short film. This is often done with feature-length scripts let alone a 10 minute short. Unless you have tons of money to spend I would find another script if they want too much money for it.

I would imagine that you need to see what the writter is asking for the work, and then its just a case og hagling for a better price. Cleary.

Ugh. I hate haggling. I guess that is the Producer job that an indie filmmaker must do, but I hate that stuff. I just like doing the artistic side of filmmaking.

Without trying to sound bitchy (Because thats not how I mean this to sound, but), the only thing that I can realy think to say with regards to your response is, how badly do you want the idea? granted different filmmakers have different strength and weeaknesses the same as some different filmmakers have different likes and dislikes. How ever if the person who owns the rights to the work is over valuing his/her work (In your opinion), then its up to you to communicate to that person, why you feel that they are asking too much of it, and how much you are willing to pay for it. Just like buying a car, no one should ever just go with the first offer just because the owner thinks its worth a certain amount. And you would be foolish not to inspect the car or evaluate a different price. The same can be applied to your situation. I wouldnt imagine that they would be asking that much money for it beings as its only a short screen play and your an idependant filmmaker. I advertised a work on here before that I was willing to part with at a price. Having evaluated the situation of the people on the forum, I decided that I would allow them to use it for free. Have you actually got in touch with the person who created the work? Cleary.
