I am planning to be a writer and director and am taking my first step by saving my greenbacks on screenwriting software. In your opinion, what software would you pick? Cost is also a factor, so keep it in mind before you recommend it.

Thanks for taking your time.

i guess Final draft is the main one, http://www.finaldraft.com/ it costs about $229/?115 so it is worth downloading the trial version from the website before you buy it. However many people use the free program Celtx - which is very good for its price!! you can download it from their website. http://www.celtx.com/ It also can do storyboarding, and scheduling

I know Final Draft is used by a lot of industry people (those that use software to write). I like it because it has a direct register option with WGA website. So it's easy to just hit send from Final Draft. Not a huge feature but it saves me from logging in to the WGA site and then sending my script using their upload tool.

Yeah, Celtx seems pretty powerful, but it's not as easy to use as Final Draft. I'm sure that if you put the time into learning it you'll be fine though.

The downside of Final Draft is the stupid 'activation' which has twice randomly deactivated the software on my laptop leaving me either making phone calls to California or waiting for a support email response to reactivate it.

Final Draft is industry standard. So if you're a professional, you may as well start writing with the same tools. However, if you're on a budget, you can utilize the free stuff mentioned previously. Additionally, if you are a student, you may be able to get a discounted student rate on Final Draft depending on where you intend to purchase your software.
