Very true.
I come from a different point of view than you do - which
makes an excellent discussion. If a filmmaker, after making
five short movies, still does not understand the 180 degree
rule then maybe they will finally get it making the sixth. I
learned the basic grammar of film language by making
movies - so that's the advice I always give. I am also very
aware that many people think reading about making movies
is the better method.
I figured the 180 degree rule before I even knew the term
because I broke it on my first several films. When editing I
knew the scene looked wrong and figured out why. It was
years later that I read about the 180 degree rule.
So now TheMeatballSwede has two points of view; you say
learn the basic grammar of film language from books before
he shoots - I say get out and shoot. Both methods have their
good points. I was (and am) a hands on learner - I learn faster
and better my making the mistakes and learning from them.

Sure, i can "stand" reading books if they are interesting, but i prefer learning by doing much more, since you get a better hang of it, how to implement it, instead of just reading it =).

My humble suggestion would be to make the five movies mentioned but when you do concentrate on telling the story without minimal dialogue. Tell the tell with the camera, lighting, and sound effects as much as possible.
