do you legally have to have permission to use music that is not yours in a non-profit independent film? Or can i use it now, and worry about copyrights if and when somebody wants to give me money?

Well you do but I wouldnt bother if its just like a movie to show friends or something. However if you do have aspirations to sell it then I would suggest getting the rights because whoever wants to buy it will be alot less willing to if the music still needs rights.

ok, i was just wondering. i'll probably just write the score myself. It's alot easier, and I'll just give myself the rights. lol. Thanks.
