Hello everyone, first post, I'm new to this website. So, I'll try not to put my foot in my mouth too often.

I'm in pre-production of a short film (10-15mins) and it is my first project that I will spend a considerable amount of time in pre-production. My question is regarding the overall theme/message that ends up in films...

I enjoy movies that have a deeper layer that is underneath the plot. Some theme that is the overall message of the film. In my short film, I tackle the simple theme of friendship's place in life.

???So, does anyone have a certian way they like to define their themes/message before even writing the script or anything else. I have been writing draft after draft of a "Theme Outline" to try and get my ideas pin pointed. The "Film Outline" will come second, because I want every element in this short to work towards the common goal of my theme. Please, if you have any methods of gaining more creative clarity pass them along.

Thank you for your help.

Welcome, Chris.

I can't help. I'm more of an intuitive writer. I never outline themes or even the plot.
I have an idea in my head and write.

What short films have you seen that have what you enjoy - a deeper layer that is
underneath the plot?

I'm having a tough time pin pointing any specific shorts, but any novel, short story, play, movie/short that has an underlying theme. I just wondered if people have a certian way they like to work those ideas out. In film, there seems to be 1,000 ways of doing one thing, but I was wondering if anyone has a method they prefer to use.

Yea I think, you should get a idea, the theme or message will come from your writing. Thats what I think seperate good scripts. Some have messages and meaning some dont. Maybe look back at someother stuff youve written, grab a message out of that and go with it. The method is just doing it, finding your own method...thats how I see it anyways
