Showing a book in a movie

Hi everyone,

(apologies in advance if this was previously discussed)

I was wondering what legalities I should take into account when displaying a book in a movie. For example:

1) Showing a book cover to illustrate that a character is reading it. For example, John wants to be a car mechanic so he's shown reading "Car Repair for Dummies."

2) Showing an image/illustration in a book. For example, John is reading about oil change techniques and we see the illustration from the book he's studying.

Would I need to contact the author/publisher for permission? Is there a standard licensing procedure for getting such rights?

Or is it just easier to print my own fake cover & page and not have to worry about it?

Thanks in advance!

I could be wrong, but I think it comes under the same auspices as Product Placement. It's not like you're using the content of the book and claiming it to be your own, the physcial book itself is merely visible. I wouldn't think you'd need anyone's permission.

Morgento,

That's what I was thinking, I hope that's correct... would make things easier for me!

I have found very little information on this matter, I may end up having to consult with an attorney.

Thanks for the feedback.
