This question is only for those who have read Dov S.S. Simens book, "From Reel to Deal."
I'm one of those newbies who is planning on a career in writing and directing. Right now, I'm working on finding ideas for my first feature film. I was reading from the book to write a stage play for my first feature. However, I realize that the book is from the filmmaker's point of view and not a writer/director's. Should I still do a stage play or do I have the freedom to write whatever I want? Keep in mind again that I'm planning on being a director, too.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
It has been a long time since I read that book but I think he was suggesting that the screenplay be as basic as a stage play. That is very limited cast and locations.
I would suggest a few shorts before a feature. The ideas don't need to be as complicated and you get a sense of completion as you learn and progress.

Thanks RJ!
I think I'll take your advice. It doesn't hurt to procrastinate every once in a while.
I jumped in and did a feature first. Cost a lot of money, I learned a lot of lessons the hard way, and the whole project nearly broke my will.
I wish I'd done some shorts first. Even music videos to learn the camera, lighting, SFX and logistics would have saved a number of headaches.
