Can anyone tell me what shotgun mics they are currently using and how it is working out for them? If you know the price mention it too.

SAME FOR LIGHTING.

I am starting from scratch so I can only aford to buy the bare minimum and build up my gear. I do not want to rent, I need to be free to shoot at a moment's notice. I want basic, but quality gear and currently plan on starting my purchasing with

1- one good fluid head tripod
2- a set of decent lights for indoors shooting
3- one on camera light (battery)
4- MOST IMPORTANTLY - ONE GOOD MIC

I am shopping around and asking anyone who has been using similar gear to pitch in their 2 cents. I may rent a mic so to test drive it before taking the plunge and buying it.

Thank you all for your input.

I use a Lowell Light kit (3 lights) and a few more construction lights from Home Depot. I use a Sennheiser 416 shotgun mic and have been using it for 10 years. Find a similar equivalent. For your lights you will want to use the same temperature bulbs so the light output is identical. You can buy them at most lighting supply houses.

There are three main suppliers of shotgun mics:

Sennheiser is the mic most used by professional sound recordists. They are expensive and worth it. Check out the ME-66 and the ME-67.

Audio-Technica makes great mic?s and they?re cheaper. Check out the AT835b.

I?ve never used Azden mic?s. They?re inexpensive but I?ve don?t hear too many good things about them.

A good mic is an investment. It will last longer than your camera - why skimp?

lol C.I., do you just save that on your clipboard and paste it anytime someone says the magic mic word!

Yep! New people are always coming to the boards asking about lights, cameras and mic's and they don't have the time to look at the other threads that ask the same questions. So I just keep a reply and hope I can help a little.

I guess I could put it as a sticky, but I kinda like offering the personal touch. Most of the time people never respond so I don't know if they even read it or if it helped, but every once in a while someone actually sticks around and becomes a valuable member of this board.

And that's kind of the point.

Senheisser 416 here too, though I've used the MKH60 before and the quality was a bit better... not enough better to justify about another $500 on the price though.
