Short Film Idea

Here's a short film I thought of.

A man has just an average day in his small town, and starts to read his favorite book. He realizes something at the end of it, and realizes it's extreme importance. With that, he realizes that if anybody knew of it, he would be killed. So he burns the book, and kills himself.

It is supposed to be like 2 or 3 minutes long. This would be my first time making a film, and you can critize me in any cruel way you want ?:D? , I would just like opinions.

Small Details: The film will be called The Find. The book he reads would be called Cellar Door. I thought if it when I heard that a linguist said it was the most beautiful thing in the english language. He lives in Nehalem (next to Cannon Beach on the coast of Oregon, US). He lives in a small house with shag carpet, and old furniture. I was hoping it to have an aged type of feel to it, and pretty good suspense at it's climax, and sadness at the end.

Thanks,

Vantango ?xx(?

OMG very depressing! Not bad, but can you make a little more positive?

Thank you ?:)? . It won't be truely as gruesome as it sounds, and it will be very positive for the most half. The only part where it is depressing I think would be when he finds out the secret and then on through the ending of the movie.

Hmmm ... intriguing concept, but it raises some questions:

1. You say he realizes something at the end of the book. Is it part of the book? If so, why hasn't he realized it before? If not, what's the connection?
2. How do you plan to show him realizing something? With voiceover? Speaking out loud?
3. Does anyone else read this book? If not, why does he have to burn it? If so, why does he think he needs to burn the book?
4. I know this is supposed to be short, but 2-3 minutes may be too short.
You're not going to have a lot of time to show his "average day", and without some kind of explanation the ending is going to be very, very abrupt.

Just my two cents. Deposit or toss away as you choose. 🙂

OK, Looks like I got alot of questions to answer ?:)? .

1. Yes, the part of the book is the ending. He read the book when he was younger, and he just has more common sense to realize the "secret" .
2. I plan to show it by having the Camera looking up at him at an angle while he raises his eyebrows and widens his eyes, and then hurriedly flip back to the starting of the book, looking suprised, and kinda scared.
3. No, nobody else has read the book. It was his Grandfather's autobiography during Prohibition. He has to burn it because if he gets caught, his life and money could be in peril. He cannot leave any trace, it is too important to be just thrown away.
4. Maybe I will extend it. What I was planning it wasn't going to be his whole day, it starts out him buying groceries in a grocery store.

Thanks for the questions! It really developed my story.

He would have to go through interrogation, and then maybe a death sentence. He realizes it would be much better to do the latter.

Some follow-up questions:

-- Does anyone else even know the book exists?
-- Is he alone while he's reading the book? If he is, it's going to be much more difficult to convey the narrative information you need for this to work. For instance, how is anyone going to know that this is his grandfather's autobiography, if no one else knows about the book and he doesn't tell anyone?

So what happened to the writer? reader? editor? The other people at the publishing house who probably read the book. The book reviewers? You might want to have this less of a book and more of a doctoral thesis perhaps one that wasn't even published yet.

Imagine the main characters old roommate was ready to defend his PHD, had his thesis all ready to go. Then disappeared. The main character is going through the stuff when he comes across the thesis and the secret.

1. Nope
2. Yes, he lives alone. The audience might not realize it is his grandfather, but a relative. I will have his name on the book, and an answering machine will say the main character's last name, giving away the fact that they are related. He also might say something about it.

There is little dialog, and no, there won't be anybody else in the picture, its all about the main character. I just would like to do something basic for my first film (that I take seriously).

He was the one who created the book, no one else was into the making of it. It is sort of a journal of his life, if you will.

Hmm, I'm not sure about the thesis part. They live out in the coast, and do not have the education, or just the common sense, to want to recieve a PHD. You can access the photos for the location soon at my website.
