Happy (day after) Thanksgiving!
I?m new to the forums, so let me introduce myself. My name is Dave Barrett, and for a time I was a special makeup effects artist, before (the dark times... before the empire) computers took over, and the work dried up. My IMDB listing is: http://imdb.com/name/nm0057108
Well, if you can?t do one thing, do another, I always say.
Long story short, I've recently found an investor who's offered to put up seed money to get the ball rolling in producing my latest script. I?ve come close before, but never to the point of someone offering to cut a check!
My question is, where do I go from here? I?m an artist, not a businessman. I?ve lived, and worked, in Hollywood for 15 years; I know the basics, so I know not to get screwed (I hope), but I?ve never put a film together from the bottom up.
Any advice, wisdom, and/or mentoring would be sincerely appreciated.

Hi Dave. Small world.
I was the first EFX guy De Gaetano and Sabo contacted to do MetalBeast in 1989. My quote was too high and they still owe me money... I spent some time at MMI too.
If you have money it's time to get your self a producer.
What are you going to be doing on this project?
Is this investor going to finance the entire project, or is this just enough money to hire a good producer and UPM to put together a business plan and start raising the money?
Do you have a completed budget?

You're lucky you didn't get it. That show was a clusterf***
My goal is to direct. If that stands in the way of raising more money or guaranteeing a completion bond, I'll be happy with my writing credit and entrance to the guild.
The investor has offered to put up a small five figure sum to "get the ball rolling," as I said. I know a few name actors on a good enough basis to ask if they'll do it for scale as a favor, and thought if I had letters of intent, it might generate interest.
I already have feelers out to a couple small-time producers, but nothing I would call promising.
I don't have a completed budget yet, but someone is doing a breakdown for me, as soon as their show goes on hiatus for the holidays.

So you?re planning this a full Union show? SAG, WGA, DGA, IA?
If so, there?s little I can to as far as advice. I?ve never put together a full Union show. As far as the business end goes, a good workable schedule, a low realistic budget, an experienced UPM and name talent attachments will go a long way for a first time director. But I?m sure you knew that.
Sorry I can't help with any more advice.

Not neccessarily a full union shoot. As I understand it, SAG has special rates for indie productions. Getting into WGAw and/or DGA is not a requisite, but a goal, as I realize that's far more likely on the next show.

I'll need help with pre-production, and putting together a good indie crew. I've been out of the loop a while, and lost contact with a lot of people.
I'd like to email you a copy of the script, if that's ok (Unless you're in town, then I could drop off a hard copy).
You should know what you're getting into. lol

I've never heard from Certified Instigator since my last post, so once again, any help would be appreciated.
Thank you and Happy Holidays.

I don't know what happened, Dave.
I contacted you via e-mail and never heard back. I assumed you have found other help.
