I use Celtx. (?url? http://celtx.com/?/url?)
It's probably the best free one around.

It also combines some other pre-production tools which is useful for me as I don't just write, but produce/direct etc.

There are also commercial alternatives such as Final Draft or Movie Magic Screenwriter, but I haven't used either so i don't know how good they are.

Good Luck.

I wrote my first few drafts as a text file (allowed me to write parts at work at parts at home). Then I imported it into Movie Magic Screenwriter which perfected the formating and allowed me to generate a lot of production information that made things easier for scheduling the movie. It can also export production information into another Movie Magic program but I don't think that is as useful for an independent, at least I've gotten by without the second program.

Actually I liked writing in the text file.

I used Final Draft 6 a while back (until it disapeared from my computer) and it was pretty awesome. However it is expensive to buy.
I currently use Microsoft Word with some special free formatting thing I got from some site. Can't remember the name, but the thing is OK.

Yeah, Final Draft is great, but it's about a hundred pounds to buy, so a bit much for a struggling screenwriter. I've been meaning to check out celtx, I've heard some good things about it, and it's free :).

Try Sophocles, which is both good and cheap.

Thanks for that link, I had no idea there was a free screenwriting program out there!

Final Draft is expensive, but I will say that if you intend to be doing a whole lot of writing, it's probably going to turn out being worth every penny. I honestly believe that better writing comes out of Final Draft (I can't speak for other programs because I haven't used them) than when one is writing in Word or what have you.

When you have to shoot, shoot -- don't talk.

I have the full MovieMagic Screenwriter software and I don't have a single complaint against it, it's fantastic. Easy to use, lots of features and, at least for me, I've never had any technical issues with it crashing or anything like that. It is, however, expensive which could put you off. However, as has already been said, if you're serious about screenwriting, then somewhere down the line you're going to have to shell out for a legit programme.

BTW, I've never used Final Draft but I've only heard good things about that too.

I know there should be a witty or profound comment here, so here goes...Boobies. Thank you.
