Hi,
I have been working on a screenplay for a feature. Recently I gave a general idea about the script to a good friend who works with a post production company. He informed me that a director in his company is actually looking for ideas that he can make a feature out of and that he might be interested in my script. He asked me to type a one page long self report about the general idea and that he'll use that to get the director's opinion.
While I totally trust my friend, I'm not sure how to go about this. I don't even know the director and wonder if I may get ripped off. It would take some time to finish off the screenplay and get a copyright. Any suggestions how I can proceed?
Thanks!
I believe you can copyright summaries and outlines, etc. You can do it online so time really isn't the issue if you're worried.
I would say ideas, however, are somewhat a dime a dozen and there is a good chance someone out there in Hollywood land has had a similar idea already. What you bring to the table is a screenplay that brings that idea to life. So I'm not sure I'd bother to copyright a summary or outline I'd certainly copyright (and register with the WGA) a screenplay.
