Does anyone else have the sneaky suspicion that pursueing a screenwriting career in the UK is completely pointless?? I mean, where's the market for scripts? We have no film industry to speak of, and whatever indie productions occur are so low-budget that you'll never make a living writing for them.
The only two UK films I can think of that have been made recently are 'Confetti' and 'Alien Autopsy', both so risible that I'm in fear of a Candyman-style attack just by mentioning them. So, if that's an indicator of UK feature film writing, any newbies/hopefuls better pack they're bags for LA right now.
So, that leaves TV. Is that where new writers here should concentrate their efforts?
TV, basically, and the odd low-budget movie. Or you can write scripts set in America and try to sell them to Hollywood.
But if you want to make a living here, you probably have to go for TV.
Well in some interviews I've seen with different director they say that working out of hollywood and in europe is better than the states. One reason is because it's cheaper and you don't have many limitations than for working in the states. This was an interview with Eli Roth,an average director who really didn't like hollywood because they arent turning out any good material. So he decided to work in Prague, i think, and he said in the interview it was much better in his opinion. So if you can find some people to work with form your own small company or something...it may be hard at first but it would be worth it I would think.
Good writing will be found no matter where it is written.
Many executives maintain relationships with UK agents, looking for that hot new thing.
I keep at it. There's no reason why us Brits can't do as well, if not better, than a lot of American screenplays.
