I need advice on how to think of a main idea for a movie. I can easily write movies from an idea but, for me the challenge is thinking of an original idea to start off with. I'm not asking you for an idea, I'm just asking for advice.

There isn't really a specific way to think of an idea. The hardest part is waiting for inspiration, just do stuff, hang out with friends go places and before you know it an idea will strike you.

Welcome to filmmaking.net, GRob1211

Why do you want to write a script if you don't have any ideas for
a movie? I'm not being sarcastic and I'm not being mean - I'm
very serious.

That's a question you need to ask yourself. If you don't have
a main idea for a script, if there isn't a story you are passionate
about telling, if nothing is coming to you that you think would
make a terrific movie; then why do you even want to write?

And it's a question I am very curious to hear your answer to.

Some people are creative. Ideas pop into their heads left and right and the problem is sorting them out. YOu have a problem, well I'm not sure how you could deal with that. The only suggestion I could suggest is the following exercise.

Pick your favorite two movies and find a way to mix them up. Hopefully they are of different genres so you get an interesting mix.

Another way to do it is watch a movie you like and find out whats wrong with it. How could I do this better or more interesting.

MOre often than not both angles won't work. That's why it's an exercise. But hopefully it'll get your creative juices flowing a little.

I sometimes have this problem, too. I'm totally uninspired. You can try to force it, but that never works out as well as getting a real inspired idea. But then, out of nowhere, it's like a dam breaks in my head and the ideas start coming faster than I can write them down.

Sometimes it helps to use things like this:

to get inspiration. Sometimes it helps to just start writing a throwaway script. Some people get inspired by scenery. Really, it's a matter of deciding what inspires you.

You and I should get together because I have the story and the screenplay but I need the film crew.

I've been able to maintain an idea notebook. It sounds cheesy, but it's really helped me. Every time I get even the slightest idea, I write it down. Sometimes one part of an idea works with another part of another idea. Keep a notebook.

i think the most important thing is first to define at what genre you are good in..the idea for me is secondary issue incase if you dont have any idea. every writer cannot write on every genre... some one is good in horror some one is good at comedy, drama, action etc...a writer may be good in 2 genres but cant be the master of all genres. so i personally think first of all GROB should think what movies he like the most? comedy? horror etc

then in a privacy he should try to write something of him withou thinking of a script..just wtire something you like....and see what is that genre? and what genre you personally like..

getting ideas is easy if your favorite genre is suspence and tragedy...local newspapers are full of murders, and tragic accidents...read them and try to count the charachters related to that toic. suppose aman died in road accident. ok this is the news of the day. how many people will be connected to him. his wife or girlfriend, children, parents...ok select any charachter like lets say wife.... whats her life now? what problems can she face?? if it is drama then well ok.normal life itself is a problem ...paying bills moving the life forwards and taking care of kids...if the genre is suspence then well.you can say now a lonely wife who was actually an eyewitness of his husband's death...why was the cause of tht accident?? may be it was a murder...

see this how things proceed.......i hope you have atleast some idea
