Look, I am really new in this business and I have a lot of creative story ideas. One film script is finished and I need help. Can someone help me out with formulating a sample budget for a feature film 120 pages in length?

Shooting on DV,HDV, 16MM, 35MM? You really need to decide what way you'd prefer the script to be shot. Any action sequences, special effects, extensive grip equipment, lighting, night or day, both?

Impossible to estimate or even blindly guess without at least the above info.

Thanks for responding. I will be shooting on HDV, day and night, inside and outside, no real action sequences or special effects except for some gunshots.

Ok HDV.

Gear borrowed, owned or rented and I mean full kit?

Honestly Claudia Im not being smart, Im going through this myself right now.

Let me know if your gear is all rented. Will you have a crew to be paid or defered payment offered?

In fact just tell me if you want a sample budget for someone else to cough up the dosh. Thats a little easier.

Hope its gonna work out for you.

O.K. H:

Actually, I want the sample budget to provide to potential investors where as I would include the costs of purchasing the equipment. If that does not work out, I do have access to equipment for usage. If any obstacles arise in that area, I guess I would have to be prepared to hire someone with their own equipment. I would like to have a crew with deferred payment, however, I do want the camerapersons (2) to be paid. Should I get a substantial investment from other parties, I would like to also provide some type of expense payments to the remaining crew members. Whatever you provide to me will be of tremendous help.

If you go to ?url? http://petemay.com/2004/downloads.htm?/url?and download the sample budget it will give a template to work with that is made for using for the very same reason you need it. It will allow you to fill out everything specific to your production. I am reading his book for a class I am taking, and he is very informative. It should have everything you need.

I have a lot of experience in budgeting small productions - I have a few questions for you:

Are you approaching serious, experienced business people who are looking to invest in a movie that has a strong potential to turn a profit? Or are you looking to put together a budget for friends and family who believe in you and are willing to invest in your potential?

Hi:

Thanks for responding. The answer to your question is that I am approaching serious business people, experienced and non-expreienced in film production. I am trying to approach this in a business manner and want to be prepared for whomever. I want to make a good product to send to contacts in Hollywood and I believe that with lucrative financial resources I can attract and obtain some of the better actors and locations I need to work with in my project.
I have access to a professional marketing pr person to help negotiate the contracts. So, I need a budget that is self-explantory and reachable.

Then you'll need much more than a sample budget. You will need a full, detailed line item budget with very accurate numbers based on your area. Experienced investors - even if they aren't experienced in movie investments - know numbers. They will carefully go over each line and have questions before they commit. It's essential that you are prepared to answer each one.

Based only on your posts here I would have two questions:

Why are you putting in equipment purchases in your budget?
Why are you only paying the two camerapersons?

I'm glad to offer any advice I can - I just need to know your thought process in order to help.

I was able to get a sample line item budget from the link in one of the responses. I am using 2 camerapersons for the filming. I would like to pay most of the crew and the lead actors. The remaining cast and extras would just receive transportation expenses, food, and a copy of the DVD.

Putting the equipment purchase in as part of the budget would allow me to have my own equipment to continue to film other projects. I may not come across camera persons whom may have their own equipment each time I am ready to film.
