Anyone know if I am allowed to film with a tripod on any beaches around Los Angeles area? Specifically Venice Beach in Marina del Rey?

If I need to obtain permission to film there does anyone have any info as to how I could obtain permission?

I don't plan on filming anyone without their permission it will be mostly shots of the water and a couple actors.

Since you?ll be shooting on State property you?ll need to contact the Film Permit Coordinator of the California Film Commission at 7080 Hollywood Boulevard, Suite 900

The best thing to do is go there. Filing for a permit on line may be easier, but for a shoot as small as yours the personal approach can be a lot better.

It may be a small matter to you, and makes no practical difference on a messageboard - but make sure you are very clear on the difference between ?filming? which implies shooting on film, and ?shooting?.

If it?s you, two actors, a video camera and a tripod - make sure they know that. If there is going to be a small crew of even three or four people with bounce boards and a boom mic - make sure they know that.

Could you clarify the difference?

Sure.

On the pro level (for example when asking for permits to shoot on State property in Los Angeles) "filming" implies shooting on film. Typically a film crew is slightly larger than a video crew.

"Videoing" is a strange word that few people use so "shooting" often means video is the medium. It really doesn't matter on messageboards. but being clear about the medium you're shooting on becomes very important when securing permits, renting equipment and buying production insurance.

Thank you very much. I wasn't aware permits differed based on the medium... very good to know.
