As part of a video project I did for a client, I interviewed several people (all of whom signed releases.) One of these individuals, plus a crew member, would like copies of the raw footage. It's OK with the client, who I believe owns my work in this case. Should I additionally put a disclaimer on the DVDs I give the interviewee and crewmember? My concern is that these individuals might thoughtlessly pass on the DVD to a TV station or another documentary filmmaker and say "Here! You can use this footage!" I was thinking of adding a slate saying something like "For private use only - not for reproduction or distribution." Is this useful? necessary? Is this the best wording?
Thanks!
Well, no professional company would use the footage if there was a disclaimer on the disk. If you're really concerned, put a copyright message on the footage itself, or if you think that would make the people you're giving it to believe you regard them as thieving scum, you could always put burnt-in timecode on there instead to discourage any re-use.
Thanks, good advice.
