Ideas for a courtroom?

Hey all. I'm planning on shooting a film short (although it could evolve into a longer film) this summer that'll be a satire of the justice system in American. I don't have a script yet, but I'm plotting out the story right now and then I'll start on the script.

Since it's pretty early on, I'm not sure how much of the film will take place in the courtroom, but the point is some of it will and that's my question.

Do courtrooms allow high school students (I'm 16, almost 17) with no films under their belts (this is my first stab at a film and will basically be no-budget) to film in a courtroom? Obviously, I know I'd have to do it at night if at all, but I was wondering all the same. How would I go about asking them permission? the town I live in - Springfield - seems pretty friendly towards artists and such, so maybe it won't be so bad. I won't ask them until I've got the script done so they know this isn't some vandal group or something.

Has anyone ever done this before. And if not a courtroom, do colleges have mock courtrooms that they use in debates and such?

Thanks in advance!

I worked on a short film a few years ago, with a courtroom scene and we used one on a university campus, that was soley for law students. One thing though, was that it was kitted out with Plasma TVs and looked more like the starship enterprise than what your used to seeing a courtroom look like on television. It was by no means one of those ornate old buildings. It was an ultra modern room in a skyscraper. It was still layed out like one though, and I don't think we had to pay for it.

We just said it was in the near future.

You already know the answer to this question. Some might - some won't. No one here can tell you for sure what your local city hall will say.

How would I go about asking them permission?

You call and set up an appointment. Then you arrive with all the info they will ask about: know the exact number of days and hours per day you will need the location. Know the exact number of people who will be on the location. Have the name, number and address of the legal adult who will sign paperwork and act as your representative ready. Know exactly where you will get insurance if they say they need liability coverage. Have a copy of the script ready for them.

Be prepared, act in a professional manor, dress to impress and they will take you seriously.
