So I'm producing/co-directing this project with a friend of mine. It's going to be simple, short, sweet, and low-budget. The script calls for a very small set piece, a backdrop (or two) that is the walls of a futuristic, Enterprise-like starship. Basically the idea is, we see some manual laborers on this futuristic science vessel talking, shooting-the-breeze etc. So we don't need a full set, just some backgrounds to fit maybe two people sitting or standing.

So what kind of wood should I use? Should I use wood? What about patterns/textures/painting it? I really have no idea to do this. Any suggestions would be f-ing wonderful!

Use the lightest wood you can find. Typically set walls are luan - a
very light, thin plywood - and 1x2's for the frames. These can then
be painted.

In the picture you can see a frame, a luan piece cut into a shape, a
large flat covered in canvas for painting and a brick wall - painted
on the luan.

I once built an entire space station set in my garage using mostly
large sheets of styrofoam packing material. All the textures really
added to the look.

So the frames are just made by using wood glue to keep the pieces together?

No. The frames are made using nails to keep the pieces together.

I'm interested to know how the set making went or if it's currently in progress. For any panels needed to be screwed together, you could even counter sink the screw holes first and putty over them and then paint for a really nice finish. I hope it all comes together.
