I'm looking for ways to make an on-camera gun shot. Does any body know any ways to make a non-pyro squib? My actors are working for free and I don't want to tape any kind of explosives to them. I've heard of the "compressed gas" squib but can't find an insecticide sprayer. Is there anything I can sub this out with or is there another method?

Set a condom or balloon filled with fake blood under the wound location. Slip a fishing wire through the clothes (or through a hidden rip in the clothes) and onto the balloon. If you have a 'chunk' of fleshy stuff attached to the end of the fishing line as well you might get a nice chunk blowing from the wound.
If done correctly the fishingwire would be hard to see on camera and a quick yank will pop the balloon and pull the 'chunk' through the rip in the clothes. This is all easier said than done but you get the idea.

I've used th sprayer method for years - it works great.
RJ - it's actually very easy. I do it all the time. I use a condom rather than a baloon since they aren't colored (usually) and much thinner. Here's my method:
Thread a length of fishing line through a small button with a needle. Carefully punch the needle through the inside of a condom so the button is inside. A drop of latex will seal the tiny hole the needle made.
Fill the condom with blood and seal it. Liquid latex will do the job - or any "super glue".
Attach the condom to a heavy (but small) piece of cardboard with super glue or liquid latex. With a bit of twine, tie this cardboard backing to your actor.
Now score the costume where you want the blood to fly. Thread the fishing line through the costume and set up your shot. When you yank hard on the fishing line, the button will pull out of the condom and the blood will spray.
