Hey,
I am just getting the auditioning of my new short film done soon. I am wondering, how do I go by getting townhouses and apartments for my locations I need?
I have all other locations picked out and approved, but I am still wondering how to get the apartment and townhouse. I was thinking I would have to go through my list of townhouse/apartment owner phone numbers and call them up and ask them about using the locations for my film. I then thought that some owners may think I am fooling them or doing a practical joke.
I'm not sure if there is a certain way around this. I do not know anyone who lives in any apartments or townhouses. Nor do I know any owners of any.
How do I get my foot in the door to talk to the owners in person?

I know that sometimes something like this can seem overwhelming - but it's actually very simple. The only way I know to get permission is to contact people who either live in, own or manage the location you need. Some of the owners might think you're fooling them or doing a practical joke. At that point you thank them for their time and make another call. Some will just say no. Some will ask for more more than you can afford. At that point you thank them for their time and make another call.
There is only one way I know of to get your foot in the door - you walk in. Many apartments and townhouses have an on site rental office - go there. the more professional you present yourself and the more prepared you are for every question they will ask, the lees likely they are to think you're fooling or joking.

Professionalism, charm and affability will win the hearts and minds.
And don't trash the place you use. Its a sure way to get black listed, even if its an accident. Leave it how you found it, maybe better that you found it if possible. Maybe offer to do some handy work. The more you do for the people, the easier it is to get a place next time around.
That's it! You people have stood in my way long enough! I'm going to clown college!

Another couple of options: (a) if you have a lot of scenes in that location you could find a place and rent it for a month (b) otherwise you could use rent a room or suite at a Residence Inn for a couple of days and mix and match with a different exterior.

Depending on how the scene looks, you can probably shoot an establishing shot of an apartment building, then shoot the interior shots in a house.

That is defiantely a good idea, although, most of my scenes that require the apartment and townhouse, are shooting outside the house or room, into the apartment/townhouse.
I hate getting locations, prolly the worst part about a film, but oh well, Ive just gotta get off my butt and start asking people.
Thanks for all the help everyone!
