That's the same problem I have with FCP. The only HDV feature I've directed and cut was a horror show with a lot of night scenes. HDV just didn't hold the blacks as well as SD. HDV does seem to be throwing away a lot of detail.

And I agree - I use an external drive for each project. The only thing on my computer is the FCP system.

What brand of external drive do you prefer? Are they USB 2.0? Or Firewire? Oh the horrible amount of choices out there is mind boggling.

I'd use Firewire: USB doesn't seem to be as fast or reliable.

Alright, thanks. I was under the impression that USB 2.0 was supposed to be faster than firewire, but I had my doubts. Again, thanks a lot for all the info:)

Hello,
I am in Australia and we have very much the same problem with filmmaking and the money. Very little money comes from private investment, most is supplied from the government and there are certain rules in getting this money, and having applied for some of it, it is very difficult to get. So to get finiance for a feature film, I am still in the midst of drumming some up for my first feature film. It is becoming more and more a reality that I will be paying for it. That aside.

The Canon and JVC have removable lenses but the costs of getting proper lenses for them are very expensive. The JVC has a 17mm lens that is about 20K Australia Dollars. So, getting a fixed lens camera is certainly not a bad idea. The Panasonic offers the P2 cards which are 4 SD cards raid 0 on one PCMCIA card. Which can plug directly into your laptop and turns up as a Hard Drive. Many camera places might offer a deal with the Camera and cards. But the Panasonic can undercrank and Overcrank between 12 fps to 60fps and increments inbetween not sure of the increments though. Sony's are always good and have vivid colour profiles but it starts becoming personal preference. Go with the cheapest camera that has all the features you need.

I hope this helps.
