Could the forum please advise me how one goes about finding who has the film rights to a book, or if any person or company does have the rights to a particular book ? How does one then approach the publisher or author to gain the rights to produce a screen play and/or film the book.
Thank You

Simple... get a pen and paper (or a word processor), get a copy of the book and obtain the publisher's address from the front pages, then write to them and ask!

thank you for the reply here.
my concern was regarding books presently out of print and the publishing company, last known publisher, no longer exists.
Many thanks for any replies, and i will post any successes i have here for the benefit of others who may have same question.

Go to the library of congress website and do a search to see who owns it.
