I have a short film I wrote a script for, but it would require I film a scene between two actors on a bus. Any ideas how I could do this? Should I contact the city mass transit bus system, maybe they would for a cost ($) let me hire one of their drivers and a bus to drive the actors, me, cameraman around for a short time to get the scene on the bus?

They may let you shoot in a parked bus with a greenscreen behind a few windows, perhaps one sitting in a maintanace yard waiting on repairs. That way they don't need a driver so the liability is far less. Depending upon how you expect to frame the shots you might be able to substitute a tour bus, site seeing bus, church bus, or limo-van which are all generally available for rental.

Good ideas to consider. I also emailed my city bus system yesterday to see what it would cost to charter a bus and driver for a few hours, awaiting that info.

If it's any help, sometimes private coach companies buy old buses etc for the skanky, cheap services they offer. I know that my friend hired a bus from a coach company (with driver) for ?150 for about 7hours. Might be worth looking into.

Or, hop on a pretty long bus, sit behind one of the people, have the other person across from you, and do over the shoulders. Sure, the driver might get mad, but if your discreet about it and the bus is running at an hour where it's not too crowded, I think you could pull it off.

A student I knew recently did something like this, and may have actually done two trips, one for each persons shots.

It's tricky, and you'd have to be discreet, but maybe you could even just let the driver know "Won't cause any harm or anything, only take a bit, won't even notice..."

I've seen it done, and it looks pretty good, your more strict about what shots can be performed, but its cheap.

I would imagine that you still need to get a release form signed to film on a bus as it is still privite property. I would also imagine that the images you capture would be full of continual movement and could perhaps even distort your image if you are using adidgital filming equipment. Cleary.
