Hi!

I'm shooting a short soon, and wonder if anyone here has any experience with casting? How to set up the audition? Should I take in one participant at the time the first round, and then let them read together? Any techniques or tips would be greatly appreciated. ?:)?

If you already have seen headshots and made your picks, I would pick a location and day to have them audition. We booked our talent in 10 minute increments. This gave us about 5 minutes to: see each actor individually, see if the actor was worth investing some time on, provide some direction on the audition to see if we could work with them, and then 5 minutes to make notes and discuss.

We did a full weekend and booked 200 actors for 6 parts. We had about 110 actors show over the two days and from there, we narrowed it down to about 12 actors for our call backs.

During our callbacks we informed our actors that they would need to be available to stick around and read with other actors. It's tough to have them stick around in the initial casting call because they might be waiting hours before you find someone that they can read against.

Our biggest challenge was finding a place that could accommodate the number of actors we were auditioning. If you're in the LA area, I have some great suggestions. But if you don't mind actors in your driveway or living room, you can have auditions at your home. Your local high school or college may also be willing to work with you on providing a space to audition actors.
