I will be mainly editing my videos on Avid Xpress Pro HD. Should I buy one of the systems recommended on Avid's website or should I configure my own? One problem with the ones on Avid's website is that I don't like many of the configurations that they included with system. I already one 320GB and one 250GB SATA hard drives and the latest version of Soundblaster's sound card and many others. In addtion, I like to have a faster processor and more RAM memory. The systems Avid endorsed don't have what I need, but I'm afraid that if I don't go with Avid's recommendation, I will have problems later on. Your suggestion is appreciated.
If you buy an Avid-certified system then you should be 99% sure that it will just work. However, I have a completely home-built system and Xpress Pro HD works fine for me.
Depends on how much risk you want to take, but Avid are pretty conservative about certifying systems... really, if you're running software-only (no Mojo) it should work on any decent PC. The main issue is that if you don't have an nvidia graphics card they disable some of the realtime 3D effects.
Well, the rules out my idea of buy the latest ATI FireGL card then. So Avid does recommend using nvidia vide cards, correct? I always has been using ATI card. Now, if I will be using Avid's Mojo then it is stronly recommended that I use one of the systems Avid certified, right? I wonder if there is a way around this.
Yeah, if you want all the bells and whistles you need an nvidia card. And if you want Mojo you should really buy a certified system: it has a lot of extra performance requirements (e.g. multiple PCI buses).
Any kind of nvidia card?
Not sure, I'm using an ATI card :).
The Nvidia card needs to be a Quadro I think, but you can check the specs on Avid's web site www.avid.com.

A lot of people are using non-Quadro cards, though you may need one for a certified system.
