Hi,

I am new to the forum and trying to cost out a fairly small production. If our finished sequence is 10-12 minutes, and we shoot 50-100 minutes of film, how much would the actual film cost?

Also, how much would video cassettes and tapes, and transfer, print and duplcation cost for a 10-12 minute sequence.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

That depends on a number of things. First: I'm assuming 16mm film? If you're shooting at 24fps, that means 50-100 minutes of film would be 2000-4000 feet of film. It'll be cheaper to buy it on 400' cores rather than 100' spools if your camera can take them. It'll be cheaper still if you can find recans or short ends, although this can be tough to do and the quality of the film is always in question. Also affecting price will be the film stock you use: black-and-white is generally cheaper than color, and processing is generally also cheaper. I'm not particularly up on film costs because I haven't shot film in a long time, but this should give you a starting point.

Transfer costs can also vary quite widely. If you just want a rough transfer to edit with and then have the actual film cut, you can get away with a much cheaper transfer. For something like this, you might want to check out www.moviestuff.tv

Good luck, and hope everything goes well!

Color negative 16mm will cost appx. $130 to $140 for 400' rolls and appx. $40 to $50 for the 100' daylight load reels.

Figure about .14 per foot to process. Add .08 per foot for Telecine prep and a good transfer house will cost about $250 to $300 per hour to transfer to tape. That's lab time, not running time.

16mm runs at 36 feet per minute.
