If I wanted to do rewrite of a film that was originally made in the fifties, how would I find out who holds the copyright to it. Also if I wanted to do a treatment of a story by another writer who would I approach for permission, the writer themselves or the publishing company.

If the film is available on DVD or VHS look at the back of the box to find the copyright holder. You can also check the title in IMDb and click on ?company credits?.

To write a treatment based on another writers work you will need to contact both. Start with the publisher and they will direct you to the current rights holder.

And don't forget - you can go to the copyright web site and research titles there.
