Hello group,
I am about to start auditions, and I wonder how you all deal with the following: I have a good idea what the characters for the various roles should look like. Now, when I look at some of the more famous actors out there, they often look totally different from what you actually see in the movie. My question is: how can you 'see' what to make of an actor, with regard to physical appearance ? Would it be helpful to have a makeup specialist assist with the audition ? Any ideas are welcome...
Regards,
Georg
I think focusing on the character's specific "looks" is NOT a good place to start. In your auditions you should focus on a person's performance and what they bring to a character. You may be supprised by the people in your audition and may even want to change the story's character to "fit" an actor's ability. "Looks" are superficial and can be worked out later (with a good makeup/costume person).

I'm not sure what you mean by "they often look totally different
from what you actually see in the movie." What famous actors
out there look totally different from what you actually see in the
movie?

I think he's thinking like Russell Crowe in the insider looked very different than Russell Crowe in Gladiator. Frumpier with a comeover. Or Charlize Theron in Monster.

When you are hiring NONAME actors go for talent, and if they can emotionally fill the shoes of your character. Don't worry to much about looks, unless it's important for character,(like a Prom Queen or something like that) Don't forget that sometimes a really good actor can add a lot to a movie, and usually the better the actor the more actor friends they have.
Sometimes talent will come second fiddle to looks in low budget movies, and that's why actors like low budget movies.

Most indie budgets aren't big enough to change an actors looks. To make people up like Robert Downey Jr in Tropic Thunder, or Ben Stiller in the Dodgeball fat suit takes HOURS and costs big bucks. Even the Tron actors spent hours to get into the suits. You have to pay for those hours.

From my book ?url? http://www.rebelwithoutadeal.com?/url?
I narrow people down be asking myself 3 questions. Does (s)he look the part?
Does (s)he act the part? Do I want to hang out with this person? NO to any of
these is a deal breaker.
Find the person who walks in and looks the part. That will cut down on makeup. Hopefully they are pretty, because it is easier to sell a movie with pretty people in it.
Find the person who can act the part, because no matter how pretty they are if they piss the audience off when they open their mouth, you've lost them.
Find the people you want to hang with. There is nothing like a bad apple that truly spoils the whole bunch on set.
