Are you looking for modern uniforms or period. WW2 will set you back some (especially the German stuff). 60s era, not so much. Modern stuff, I have no idea but you might be able to get government help and free gear assuming your picture isn't hostile to that military.

This is posted on the fxhome forum by "mikeh", I think this is a great cheap resource:

I've decided to put together a list of cheaper alternatives for WW2 uniforms and equipment, so hopefully some of you great filmmakers are inspired. These uniforms are not 100% accurate, but are dirt cheap, and would be great for extras and even main characters.

There are some great high quality reproductions available, however, sometimes they can be out of budget. (atthefront.com)

Please don't copy this, just link it here.

US ITEMS

Wool Uniforms: M1951 Shirt and Pants, http://www.armysurpluswarehouse.com/product/m1951-wool-field-shirt-3434.cfm VERY Close to WW2

M41 Field Jackets
Civilian khaki jacket or windbreaker, can be found anywhere. Get cheap ones, like some $25 ones at Sears or something.

M43 Field Uniforms:
Czech M85 $5 http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=223026
M65 & M51 Field Jackets (very similar, except these use zippers instead of buttons) Search eBay $12

Army HBT Uniforms:
Dutch Shirts $5 http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=249171
Austrian Shirts $6 http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=69973?/b?
OD BDUs $12 Search around, easy to find

US Winter Camo:
Bed Sheets $10

US HBT Pants:
Greek $14 http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=442729
Austrian $6 http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=459624

US Wool Pants:
Italian Wool Pants $8 http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=462864

US Boots:
French Combat Boots $30 http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=97128

US Helmets:
Steel Pot M1 Helmet $15 Search around, surplus stores, eBay
Steel Pot Liner only, helmet net, $12 (a lot lighter then actual helmet)

Also, always search eBay, as you can still find some original stuff for not too bad prices.

GERMAN ITEMS

German items are always more money, that is because they didn't win the war, and massive amounts of surplus did not hit the market. However, some of the countries in the area developed clothing very similar.

Winter Parka:
Swedish ones, $3.50 ea http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=442724

Wool Overcoats:
E. German $15 http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=236338

German Tunics:
Norwegian, Swedish and Swiz tunics are all close. About $35 ea, so search around. armynavydeals.com
East German coats are pretty similar http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=459601 (not wool though, look for wool ones)

German Wool Pants:
E. German $5.50 http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=386068

German Helmets:
Cushman Helmets, paint them up and they should be fine. http://www.cushmanpaintball.com/GermanHelmetPage.html

German Hats: Search eBay about $15

Camo:
The only camo that comes close is reproduction. You can find splinter BDUs on ebay, or some SS jackets for cheap, although they are not %100 accurate. Atthefront.com occasionally has a splinter smock for $30. Don't use flecktarn, it stands out too much.

I suggest filming in the winter, as you can always put bedsheets over people and use cheap wool coats. It also hides up some equipment issues.

Well there it is for now. Hope it helps you. Let me know how your projects turn out. Remember to look for reproductions if you are going for accuracy. Also, properly 'age" these uniforms, it looks alot better. (run around, through in mud, give to dog etc..)

Now you all have no excuse.......make WWII movies!

WORLD WAR I

US:
