I'm currently trying to rework a scene where there is a lot of exposition and trying to find a way to change it up and keep it a little interesting compared to most "point it out" type scenes. The enemy in the script is a private investigator and needs to basically explain an ongoing case with his partner and also his plan to blackmail his client. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to make this exposition scene more interesting or different? I have a bunch of ideas but I would love to see if you guys have any tips or ideas.

Hi

What ideas do you have first of all, i think it'll be better to hear what your ideas are first of all so we can then see the route your film is going, maybe we can then build on those ideas with you?

You could do what they do these days and have random flashbacks to previous parts of the film that the audience missed or was hidden from them as it comes together.

Otherwise the only thing I can come up with off the top of my head is to build it up. The main character can build up the scene and pulling in what has already been known and then bam! expose the purp.

A common technique is to have something else going on while they talk. For example Indiana Jones is going to eat poisoned dates while they discuss the length of the staff of Ra. Will he eat a date? Takes some of the sting out of somewhat dull discussions when there is something else of interest going on.

So Imagine Detective #2 is fixated on their secretary. He tells Detective #1 who tells him he's stupid, and to listen up. Detective #1 then downloading his exposition. During the rest of the scene Detective #2 steals a glance at the secretary through a crack in the door. Adjusts his inseam. Maybe even picks up a bayonet trophy (in the scabbard) and slides it in and out of the scabbard seductively. The idea is his actions make us smile, or laugh, while we're digesting the exposition.

Another similar idea is Detective #1 is hungover and everything in the office reminds him of booze. Empty bottles, a flask, a picture from the case of a guy vomiting.

Anyway, I don't know if either works with your characters but you get the idea.
