I have been doing more researching today before I buy... I'm trying to learn about burning to dvd aswell... Now when I make a film at the moment without top end software I find it makes an AVI file but surely it cant be good enough for a dvd as even when viewed on the computer it plays in a small box and when you enlarge it goes pixelated.
Is this different once you buy a top end piece of software? Which ones should I buy from start to finish to make my movie?
Is it easy to capture 30p and then make the film and put it on DVD? Because Ive been reading difficult steps about 24p and 23.97p making problems.
Thanks ?:)?
You shouldn't run into problems with 30p and a 27.97 timeline.
As for exporting to DVD, you're right, AVI is a PC compression file for web most of the time. mpeg2 is what DVD studio pro uses to encode for dvd. It's much, much better. You can get special encoding programs but mpeg2 has always worked for me.
As for exporting. Final Cut and Avid both export full quality quicktimes, or compressor (With FCP) can export a compressed video and audio to fit a feature on a DVD5.
Hi Dave,
Thanks, when you say export to dvd as quicktime, will that be as mpeg2, I've never really used quicktime before. But This time I'm wanting to go fully professional on the editing by buying all the professional gear...I've edited alot before in my ametuer years on movie maker with my 3ccd camera and the way I used to make dvd's for sale to people was by stopping and starting the dvd recorder with my television to view it....As you can imagine it is time consuming that way and it was only for a hobby but I managed to sell about 40 dvd's.
Anyway now I've practised I'm ready to push the boat out...As you can see I am working on the website untill I can start filming in July www.aviationcafe.net/theidentity , I am also drawing out screenplays (storyboards - Room is covered in them) ?:)?
And I now have my mind made up on DVX100b and I am guessing it's now between Final Cut pro and Avid...
Quicktime format is .mov, mpeg2 is .mpeg. You can export as quicktime or quicktime reference to DVD studio pro. DVD studio encodes to mpeg when it builds the DVD.
And as for FCP vs. Avid, I have to recommend Final Cut. It's easier to pick up (using avid is like driving a spaceship, lots of power but clunky and hard to maneuver), and cheaper to set up. Avid mojos and software go for about 5000 now, which is much cheaper than it used to be, but still plenty pricey. Final cut is only 1600 (these prices don't include the mac to run FCP or pc/mac to run Avid). Or, if you're strapped for cash and already have a PC, I suggest sony vegas.
Is final cut pro only for mac? you've probably already saved me money had I bought it ?:)? I think 1600 is alot too...I'll have a look at sony vegas...
Just wandering if I can make it look widescreen with a DVX and sony vegas?
I've just had a look at vegas 8...it looks really good...do these pro editors allow you to do picture in picture...Ive seen it done in films and would like to do that too.
Yes, FCP is mac only.
Don't go running into vegas on just any PC though. Video editing is high resource regardless of the program (barring consumer products). It's cheap though, only about $600 for the full package with DVD architect.
For widescreen: I think the DVX100b might shoot native 16:9 (don't quote me on that though, I'm not sure). But regardless, you can letterbox anything.
