Last night as I was falling asleep an idea for a short film came to me, the entire plot, cast, so I woke up this morning and in just a couple of hours wrote out a 4 minute short including dialog, everything. Damn. Some days you wonder how to come up with a story, and other days it just pops into your head. What's up with that?!? Anyhow, just had to share I am having a great day because I am so happy at cranking out a short film script. Best of all I can film it indoors, one location, no crew, just three actors. Jazzed to say the least.

I love when you come across an idea like that, and you just have the whole thing pop up and it's perfect for your budget/location. But some of the worst in my opinion are when you have an idea worming around in the back of your head, and you know its there, you've got some basic idea about, say, gangsters, an alleyway, but you can't really figure out anything satisfactory, then when you do, it's going to be difficult to shoot, but you're committed to your idea, cause it's yours and you have to see it to fruition. I forget his name, but one prominent filmmaker that made several very good films, would have the biggest budget, but all his films could have been pulled off with $100 if he hadn't payed millions to have lots of famous actors and expensive crews. He did 12 Angry Men, where these 12 men are in a jury room the entire movie except for 30 seconds in the opening scene. They argue and look at a few exhibits. He also did signs, which would require a slightly bigger budget as you would have to buy 1 cheap alien suit to replicate it.

Yeah I am rapidly internalizing the importance of location, and the number of locations, in controlling cost of a film. Influences greatly what I write. It really forces us low budget filmmakers to be creative when writing.
But at the same time, I don't think it really hurts our work. Most of the time, it just influences it. I don't think it makes it better, or really worse.
