Hi!
I'm totally new in filming and film editing. Heck I admit it, I'm just a brat with a cam that shoots decent HD footage and I'm just toying around.
There's an editing effect that I don't know the name of that I'd like some general background and application suggestion on. (well I mostly need the name for it so I can hunt the info down). The effect I refer to is when the sound of the next clip starts before the video. What is the name of this effect? I'd like some background inforamtion and suggestions using it.

You most likely won't find it as a specific effect under the 'Effects' menu of your NLE. This is one of the basic transitions an editor can make. You can do it in almost any NLE (I'm not sure about Windows Moviemaker, but on a Mac, in iMovie you can). It is very simple, since it involves some cutting of audio and video tracks independently, and no any additional rendering.
Oh sorry I didn't type that right. I do know how to do the effect, I just want to know what the NAME of the effect is, so that I can look up some background information and application practices 😉
It doesn't have a name, per se. As far as I know, it's simply referred to as overlapping dialogue/sound.
You would find it described in almost any book about editing.
If you already know how to achieve it, I don't think any book is going to add very much to your knowledge of it, Tiger. As for its creative use, that's up to you, just like all other editing decisions.
Kurt,
Thanks, I'm not very educated on editing techniques. I recently got into video editing all together and I'm just learning as I go. I figured that the technique probably had a name and that there was some basic ideas about how it usually is used. Guess I'll just "play around" with it then and see what I can create. I like the effect for documentaries etc, probably due to the fact that it is so wildly used that you associate it with films like that.
Oh how I wish this forum had a email notification on replies, I almost forgot this thread 😉
