This question has basicly been answered half a dozen times on this page already, please at least read subject titles before posting your first topical question.....
first its best to make sure your computer's perfomance makes it worth buying expensive software.. ...or event cheap software.
what you need is at least a 256 stick of ddr ram, and a 1.6 mhz processor, this is rock bottom. a decent performance can be obtained as long as you have nothing else on your system and run no other apps at the same time.
in short your running pc so you cant go final cut, which means you'll want to go with adobe premier because most people cant afford avid express. adobe has a free trial of this software and filmmaking.net has the link to it.
This is not nam smokey there are rules.

this is not entirely true. although performance wasn't entirely "super" i've been edititing my movies in adobe premiere 6.0 and later 6.5 on an amd athlon 900 mhz with 256 sdram (pc133)
please DO get a decent hard drive at least ata100 or ata 133
preferrably scsi
about software: as i stated earlier i used adobe premiere and it works fine for me. It can do a lot and you'll probably be able to do what you want with it.
I don't have any experience with other software except for a short time I had to use Imovie on the imac but that sucks.
