I have a Canon XL1S and I'm editing my footage on Final Cut Pro. Is there an easy way to hook up a VCR with my camera to take footage off VHS tapes and capture directly into Final Cut?
Some DV cameras will, some won't. With my TRV900 I have to record to tape and then capture from there.
Sadly the XL1s don't have a function to accept video-in from another source, so you couldn't hook up a VHS deck and run it through that.
You need to get hold of a capture card which can accept analogue video. Alternatively, it may be cheaper just to take your VHS sources down to a dupe house and get them to dump it to MiniDV for you.

Thanks for the response, that definitely answers my question. One more question though, I also have dvd that I want to capture in final cut, would the capture card do this as well or would I need to buy software off the web that snatches info off dvd's?
You don't need a capture card to grab content from a DVD, you simply do this with software. Do a search on Google for "DVD ripping" and you'll find out loads.
