Hi - i am new to this forum but have a fair amount of technological experiences.

my problem is that my SLR that i use to shoot video has a really crappy mic. (as they all do) i capture my video through my laptop on site along with my audio through a different program. i was wondering if anyone had any ideas of any software that captures audio and video from a different source in the same program instead of me having to use 2 different programs?

thank you for taking the time to answer my question

Tom.

Which software are you currently using to capture video?

Regardless of software you use to capture your video (and audio), you should be able to choose your audio input. If you're using a Mac laptop, the default audio input is configured in the Sound system preference panel. Even if you're capturing using iMovie, you can independently select your audio source, which does NOT have to be same as video (for example, firewire).

I'm pretty sure that there has to be a similar way to choose your audio source on the Windows side of the world.

Yeah - thanks - i was using imovie for a bit - i might go back to that and have a look around in the settings, otherwise, im considering getting final cut pro, im sure that would have the option to have separate inputs?

Thanks for the quick reply 🙂

I've never used iMovie on set as I shoot, but can't you capture both
audio and video using iMovie?

I'm fascinated by your method. Do I understand correctly that you
are recording video directly from your DSLR to your laptop? What
program are you using? What microphone are you using?

I'm also curious, how is video captured live from a HDSLR into a laptop? As far as I know, the only devices that can capture HD video and transmit it live into a computer are HDV camcorders, which do it via FireWIre. I don't know of any HDSLR that has firewire and that can stream HD video live over it. I believe the only live HD output stream from these is the HDMI. And I don't think I've heard of a cheap device that would take live HDMI stream and encode it into a format that can be streamed via FireWire (or USB) and captured live by a computer (there are those AJA boxes that capture all kinds of analogue and digital video and encode it into a FCP-compatible stream, but they cost over $3000).
