Anyone know the differences between these two products, SOFTIMAGE?XSI 4.2 vs. Alias Maya 7 Unlimited? What are the disadvantages/advantages and learning curve?

Help is appreciated.

They're similar. Much of it really comes down to preference. XSI (v5 will be available soon) has a compositing feature that is a nice addition to have; Maya is more an industry standard, and you'd most likely find more help / plugins etc. using Maya. Maya also has Maya Live, a camera tracking feature, though none of the 'auto tracking' packages (Maya Live, Boujou, etc.) are solutions all the time. Both, I believe, are packaged with Mental Ray, which is very good for rendering. XSI is less expensive to purchase. Maya has nice fluid simulations; XSI has Behaviors for crowds and such. Those are some features and differences I can think of off the top of my head.

Both have somewhat steep learning curves.

Thank you very much for the explanation. I've been waiting for someone to explain to me so I can made my decision.

Again, thanks!
