Howdy. I'll be making my first short movie, which will be intentionally done with a low quality image and b&w, so it should be more simple. I want to create moving shadows with my own design but I don't know if there's some software with a tool for that (working on the shadows' behaviour on irregular surfaces seems difficult).

Do it in-camera. Trying to make realistic shadows in post (especially if they are moving or cast on irregular surfaces) is just asking for trouble.

Will they be people shadows or something else? I agree that doing it in camera is probably gonna look better if possible. Use puppets if you have to, it won't matter as they'll probably be out of frame.
