Hey guys, I've been using Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas for quite a while already...not professionally though (unless Porn editing is a profession). I'm going to start shooting a short movie and I wanted to know if there's any video format you all recommend for optimal video editing. For example, when I edit avi compressed with a divx codec on Vegas, things are a little slow on the preview. Yet when I edit raw avi, the preview plays nicely. I believe the reason why is common sense.

.MOV videos seem to play nicely on NLE software like Premiere and Vegas as well. So my question would be, is there like a "native" format for Premiere and Vegas? I'd like to know the answer to this for both Vegas and Premiere.

By the way, I believe AVID does something with the video you import and the preview looks better than any program out there, that's what I heard on a Podcast though. I hope this is easy to understand. Thanks!

What kind of camera are you shooting with? If it's DV and you import directly into your NLE off of your camera or deck, it will put into the best format for the NLE. Premiere, from my experience, uses AVI files with its own DV codec, and Final Cut Pro / Avid uses Quicktime MOV with a DV codec. I find that transcoding other types of footage into an NLE directly often causes weird behavior and messy results....
