I have to put together a director's reel. I have a list of shots I want to use in it from a number of the films I've made.
I have a few ideas floating around in my head but was wondering if there's a certain way a director's reel should be cut together?
I was thinking of doing a montage over an instrumental-techno kind of song.
Anyone know anything about making director reels?
A couple months ago I put together a video portfolio for collage applications. The first thing I did was find a very basic concept. In my case, it was me walking on-camera, sitting down in a chair, then falling over. I used this element to kick off the reel and give it some speed, and included a few similar elements throughout the reel to hold it all together.
It's actually a lot like editing a music video; you put down the music first, then cut to it. Try to mix together different media rather than keeping them in sections (i.e. if you have work in both B&W and color, mix them together so the reel doesn't feel lopsided). I also kept dialogue to a minimum and let the music drive the reel, but I'm sure it would be possible (although difficult) to make the reel dialogue-driven.
I took a similar approach when editing a trailer for my (as of yet unfinished) feature film, which you can see here: http://agingeri.spymac.com/vodcast/01_29_06.mov
