has anyone hear seen the movie Pleastville. well for the people who didn't see it. the movie goes from black and white unto black and white and color in the same shot. like 1 person would be black and white and another person would be in color. does anyone know how to get that effect? because croppin each image would be extermely hard to pull off and extremely time consuming.

i'm assuming you mean "Pleasantville"
film coloring. its not a 300 hundred dollar effect, that you can "easily do in premier".

Ummm try using the same footage twice by superimposing them and only having a character stick out... not shure exaclty how to go about it but its an idea off the top of my head

even if you did a match frame and used two video layers, to key out a specific object (unless you shoot for it and its just a box) or actor it would have to be done on a heavy weight online machine (smoke flame) and even then would be an endless task. its film coloring.

thanks for the comments. I thought it was a cool effect so i think i'd ask. but what is film color? is that like making old black and white films into color? becuase wouldn't it still involve croppin each person outin each frame?iam kind of new to video editin because i have used pinnacle studio for about 9 months now and it does have all the video effects that premiere has. but i just got premiere and iam learnin all about this stuff

No by film coloring he means in the developpement of the film itself with chemicals... has nothing to do with computers

hey i know that in adobe after effects there is an effect were you can make ur footage black and white with the exception of one color say red ... so if one of your actors is wearing a red shirt or blue or whatever u can leave that one color in while everything else is black and white .... but as people have said above film coloring is the way to go. but i thought this might be of interest?8)?

The technique thay actually used was this:

They filmed it in color, then transferred all of the color to black and white, since taking color out is easier than adding it. After that, they played the two clips over each other (the color scene below the black and white), and basically chose which characters would be in color and which would not by, let's say, using the color footage of Tobey Maguire, and the black and white footage of Reese Witherspoon, turning it into a composite. Because of this, every shot with a black and white person or object in it was considered a special effect, making it the movie with the most special effects in history. It was later beaten by Star Wars Episode 1. Hope this answers your question.

In 1998 CineFX magazine did a 6 page article on the "Making of ...".

It'll cost you 15 bucks to get it from the archives, but you might be able to find something else online or in a library. Article was called "Color My World".

Over at ?url? http://www.wrigleyvideo.com/?/url? there is a tutorial for doing a similar effect in Premiere. A bit more simplistic than what is done in Pleasantville I guess ?:)?

This can also be done very simply in FCP.
