Could anyone explain to me or link me to somewhere that does explain how to create muzzle flash or gun fire in post production? I plan on using blank guns in my movie but because of the plugs in the guns no fire comes out of the front and I think that effect is pretty important.:)

You could find yourself a muzzle flash and do a simple composite. Or, another way would be to convert your video to a sequence of individual frames, load up 2-3 of those frames into photoshop, paint in the muzzle flash, then convert the sequence back to its original format. You may be able to do this without the sequence conversion, not sure.
